BBC and Universality

Digital dreams and open skies: universal service and the BBC

As mobile providers take over spectrum from broadcasters, the age of ‘free-to-air’ transmission could be coming to an end according to VLV Trustee Professor Sylvia Harvey. In her latest article she argues we should passionately defend our right to free to air television if the BBC’s future is to be secured.

Sylvia Harvey is Visiting Professor in the School of Media and Communication at the University of Leeds. She has published on film history and policy, on the political economy of media and on broadcasting policy and regulation.  She is a founder member of the Sheffield International Documentary Festival and a Trustee of the Showroom Cinema.
